Kaye from SPIRIT Magazine was going about her business at The Merino Story in Hinds, when she was distracted by “a very grunty rumble.”  Unable to resist, she just had to check it out.

The source of the distraction was this 1963 Ford Galaxie, owned by Dave Martin. Dave, who hails from Dunedin, had seen it for sale in Auckland and made a spur of the moment decision to buy. He’s not really a Ford man, but “I am now,” he laughs.

Auto Logistics brought the car down as far as Palmerston North, and then Dave and his mate ‘Woody’ collected it from there, and drove it the rest of the way, passing through Hinds on their way home.

Dave is just the third owner of this fully restored car – it had one owner in the US, and, since arriving in NZ in 2006, has had just one owner here. He has the original handbook and all the original paperwork, stamped and dated.

This gorgeous two-door Galaxie is dressed in blue, with chrome and trim all sharp and shiny.  Under the bonnet is a big-block 390 V8, delivering a whopping 401 horsepower. No wonder it rumbles!

It’s a stunning vehicle, inside and out. The restoration did an amazing job of preserving an American icon and Dave says that it drives and runs as good as it looks. Its sleek lines are truly eye-catching.

Since arriving home in Dunedin with the Galaxie about three weeks ago, Dave has had the car out at least once every weekend. “I didn’t buy it to hide it away,” he says. “I’ll probably put it in a few shows, but I bought it to drive.”   And he’s enjoying every minute of it.

It is a bit of a gas guzzler though. “It does love petrol stations, but that’s the price you pay for buying one of these,” he says.
